A Kid for Two Farthings

UK, 1955, Carol Reed director, 96 minutes

British writer Wolf Mankowitz’s loving evocation of the Jews of London’s East End is populated with garment workers, con artists, wrestlers and push-cart vendors, all full of stifled dreams. Within this world lives Joe, an impressionable young boy, who searches for a magical unicorn to help the disillusioned adults that surround him. Filmmaker Carol Reed (Oliver!) adapts Mankowitz’s 1953 novel with vivid atmospheric detail. The exceptional cast includes Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter), Diana Dors, Sid James (the Carry On films), and Canada’s own Lou Jacobi (Avalon). A wonderful treat for the whole family!

Guest Speaker: Film Scholar Mark Clamen
