LECTURE SERIES

There’s Something Happening Here: The Music of the Laurel Canyon - Mondays: October 20 - November 10, 1:00 - 2:30 pm

Guest speaker: Dr. Rob Bowman, Grammy Award-winning ethnomusicologist

The Laurel Canyon – the West Coast music colony that flowered in the late 60s and early 70s – was a creative, collaborative, countercultural awakening. This Hollywood Hills enclave attracted such figures as The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and The Eagles. These burgeoning superstars experimented with new sounds, influenced each other, formed bands together, and produced some of the era's most prolific and enduring music. This four-part series is available in person in the Al Green Theatre, on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recordings.

From Arias & Arpeggios to Acts & Artefacts: Grand Global Cultural Centres - Thursdays: November 13-27, 1:00 - 2:30 pm

Guest speaker: Dr. Peter Harris
Immerse yourself in grandeur as we draw back the curtains to reveal some of the world’s most majestic performing arts houses and cultural centres! We’ll learn about the history and design of such renowned opera houses as Sydney and La Scala; classic theatres from ancient Epidaurus to The Globe; contemporary sites including The Met and Tasmania’s MONA; and repurposed structures such as Musée d’Orsay in Paris and London’s Tate Modern.  This three-part series is available in person, on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recordings.

And Theatre for All: The Legacy of Joseph Papp - Mondays: November 24 - December 8, 1:00 - 2:30 pm

Guest speaker: theatre critic Lynn Slotkin
“We have public libraries, why not public theatres?” championed legendary impresario Joseph Papp, who through his Free Shakespeare in the Park and Public Theatre brought more theatre to more people than any other producer in history. Born Yussel Papirofsky, Joe pioneered colour-blind, interracial and gender-swapped casting, believing that theatre could help build a more inclusive and democratic society. Visionary and gutsy, Papp nurtured innovative playwrights, discovered soon-to-be famous actors, and his productions were awarded 28 Tonys and three Pulitzer Prizes. This three-part series is available in person, on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recordings.

Extreme Close-up: Deconstructing the Craft of Filmmaking - Mondays, January 12 - February 9, 1:00 - 2:30 pm
Guest speaker: film critic Adam Nayman
Film is a collaborative art, and the greatest movies synthesize multiple creative visions through a network of inventive and refined techniques. Using examples from a wide range of classic and contemporary titles, including Psycho, Don't Look Now, Days of Heaven, Do The Right Thing and Jaws, Adam will deconstruct the different ways that movie masterpieces are made, examining five crucial filmmaking components: cinematography, editing, production design, costume/makeup, and score. Presented in partnership with the Toronto Film Society. This five-part series is available in person in the Al Green Theatre, on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recordings.
