FREE INSTRUCTION SESSIONS Small Group Personal Training I come from a family of athletes and bodybuilders, and fitness has been a big part of my life for over 15 years. My passion for helping others began through personal setbacks. In 2016, I sustained a shoulder injury during a Judo tournament, which led to a challenging five-year journey of recovery. Throughout this time, I collaborated with a range of professionals—physiotherapists, chiropractors, doctors, and fitness coaches—to regain my peak performance. This experience has inspired me to dedicate myself to guiding others through their own recovery journeys. I’m committed to helping people overcome injuries and restore their functionality, both in and outside the gym. We value our members and want you to know that whenever possible, we'll add an extra lane or two. We all know that swimming is a fantastic exercise. It works for muscle groups all over your body and is great for helping develop both your strength and your endurance. It’s also an important life skill to keep practising, and lane swimming is the ideal environment to train yourself to become an even stronger swimmer. You never know when you might need it. Lane swimming is also a fantastic training ground for swimmers who may take part in amateur events, such as open water swims, triathlons, etc. Regular lane swimming sessions help burn fat and build muscle. This is all because of the extra resistance the water places on your body. Water offers six times as much resistance as air, meaning you need to put six times as much effort into moving yourself through it than you do through air and it’s this resistance that makes lane swimming such great exercise. This extra resistance that water offers, however, is also great for helping you avoid, or recover from, injury. This is because it supports the joints and it means that there’s no impact going through them, meaning you’re much less likely to contract an injury while exercising, while it also helps you build up strength after an injury without the risk of making it worse. Nonbinary Hebrew Project - We are building a bigger tent for nonbinary Jews through a third-gender grammar systematics for Hebrew, guided by our Torah and Talmud that teach us to rejoice that which cannot be neatly categorized. This project is free, open-source, community-based, and grassroots. It lives and grows and changes with every single person who uses and adds to it. Ontario Jewish Archive’s LGBTQ+ Stories - The Ontario Jewish Archives, Blankenstein Family Heritage Centre is the largest repository of Jewish life in Canada. Here you can find the OJA’s compiled list of LGBTQ+ stories from Ontario’s Jewish community. SVARA - SVARA’s mission is to empower queer and trans people to expand Torah and tradition through the spiritual practice of Talmud study. We offer year-round learning, served up the old-fashioned way: hardcore, queer, and radically inclusive. Queering the Jewish Wedding - The aims of this project are to in-gather and archive Queer-Jewish weddings and union ceremonies of all kinds, interview the folks who crafted them, and create a video artwork and expansive resource from what's been shared. Visit the Gallery at the J - free, rotating, monthly art exhibitions from local artists VISUAL ARTS Special Programs The Gallery at the J Call for Submissions Special Programs The Gallery at the J IN MINT CONDITION* The portrayal of Jewish women (usually by men) in mass media has been marred by the overuse of familiar negative stereotypes – the Ghetto Girl, the overbearing Jewish mother, and the materialist “Jewish-American Princess”. The appearance of Jewish characters in comic stories during the Golden Age was rare and the appearance of Jewish women even rarer. When such appearances occurred, they tended to be minor roles or stereotypes. This was even the case when women were the artists, as the writers and editors they worked for were men. With the advent of second wave feminism in the 1960s and the rise of the underground commix movement, we begin to see stories of Jewish women told by the women themselves. Among the types of narratives found in comics and graphic novels by Jewish artists are: the Birthright Israel experience, December dilemma, fashion ethics, women sages, pregnancy, single motherhood, miscarriages, and the ordination of women rabbis. *This is a portion of a larger exhibition created by the Beth Tzedec Museum and is presented in honour of International Womens' Month . Feb 28 – March 27, 2025 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Call for Submissions The Gallery at the J is seeking artists and partner organizations to participate in our 2025 season! We are attracted to artwork that tells a story. We want our viewers to experience a journey - yours and theirs. Artists and organizations are asked to examine universal values through a Jewish lens. Each month has been assigned a theme/subject which represent a selection of our core principles. Please carefully review the criteria before submitting. (We acknowledge the additional themes associated with months of the year such as Asian Heritage Month and Black History Month. If there are themes and subjects you are not seeing that you feel we should include, please write to deannad@mnjcc.org for future consideration) Please click these links for additional information: Themes and Deadlines for 2025 MNjcc Gallery Season Criteria and Submission Form Floor Plan THE GALLERY AT THE J SPECIAL PROGRAMS Mifgashim: Where Jewish Canadians and Israelis Meet. This May, the Miles Nadal JCC invites you to a unique exploration of diverse identities within the Jewish community. “Mifgashim” is a photography project and exhibit that focusses on Canadian and Israeli Jews living in Toronto. Twelve families who identify as holding both of these two distinct identities will be the subject of this art project. "Mifgashim" translates to "encounters" or "meetings”. We're excited to facilitate a "meeting" between the public and the families lying at this unique intersection, where two cultures encounter one another in one family. Her provocative works – featured several times at the Miles Nadal JCC Gallery – are inspired by her secular kibbutz upbringing near the Sea of Galilee, and a rich Judaic history including folklore, mysticism, Kabbalah, Israeli poetry and Yiddish verses. Generously sponsored by the Fingerhut/Metcalfe family. Join us in-person at the Miles Nadal JCC (including afternoon tea), on Zoom simulcast, or register to receive the recording! REGISTER
