It also hosts regular seasonal camps for kids The Best Indoor Swimming Pools in Toronto: Head to the Freddie Shore Aquatic Centre in this facility right across from Spadina station and you'll be treated to a fully-accessible heated saltw ater pool in the heart of downtown. yelp My whole family has been going to the Bloor JCC since we moved to Toronto many years ago. I now live in the area and spend a ton of time at the gym. It pretty much has it all: - nice facilities - a new basketball court - every type of weight and machine you could need - a saltwater pool - a great saltwater hot tub and wet and dry saunas. While not everyone lives in the neighbourhood, the JCC is perfectly located at Bloor and Spadina right on two subway lines. Most importantly the people who run the place and people I meet by chance are all great. The staff get to know people by name and are super friendly and I have made some good friends just randomly meeting people while working out. pursuit Toronto's Best Gyms: The JCC isn’t just old men sitting in a steam room, complaining. Downtown’s only saltwater pool, complete with three speeds of swimming lanes, makes it a go-to destination for serious swimmers. "How can we have this communal responsibility to meet individual needs? This taught me a lot to learn about conflicts of access...how can we make sure that everyone's access needs are being met?" - Emunah Woolf, LGBTQ at the J Listen “This is a crossroads of the Annex. It’s a crossroad of the TTC system as well. It’s incredibly central. It’s downtown, but not really downtown. It’s certainly not uptown, but everybody can reach us…I will say that there’s no accessible washroom on this strip of like Bloor Street…I don’t think that the Annex is accessible enough,” said Arbeid. We celebrate the importance of social relationships and promote meaningful and collaborative learning. LIBBIE COWAN CHILDCARE CENTRE Our Philosophy Parent Handbook Our Faculty Fees/Admission/Waitlist Register Online Contact Us/Place Your Child on the Waitlist Our Philosophy OUR PHILOSOPHY Our "Learn Through Play" philosophy encourages the children to freely explore their surroundings. Our program is child-directed and teacher supported. The primary goal of our centre is to provide the children with a warm and respectful place where they feel safe and content. We celebrate the importance of social relationships and promote meaningful and collaborative learning. Throughout the day, children will have a variety of activities available to them including outdoor play, fun in the gym, music classes and creative activities. Our classrooms will be rich with sensory exploration and age-appropriate toys and materials. We strive to provide a fun, stimulating and creative environment for the children in our Toddler, Preschool/JK and School-Age Programs. Programming is based on children's interests and skills, and documented. Children take the lead in their learning and use their imaginations and creativity to set the tone for the planning. We hope to inspire a journey, not a destination, that is not linear or prescriptive, and that reflects the ongoing evolution of a discipline. A central part of the process is our Sheva Learning Communities, in which our early childhood educators network with each other in dialogue over the core elements, exemplary practices, critical incidents, knots in their work and more. Our philosophy: encourages each child’s positive image guides children to develop problem-solving, time management, self-help and social skills is child-directed, therefore demonstrating to children that they are an important part of our world fosters a learn-through-play environment. Children learn best through their own hands-on experiences. They are offered endless amounts of opportunities to play productively. Teachers offer guidance and assistance when necessary to ensure that children are gaining all that is possible through their activities. stimulates curiosity guides children to be empathetic, moral beings Seven Core Elements of Sheva The Sheva Early Learning Framework is coherent with the culture and teachings of Judaism in everyday life, values and principles. The Jewish lenses serve as a tool, a prism through which we overlay our traditions, our study, and our Jewish philosophy. The core elements are the fundamental components of our early childhood programs and are deeply rooted in the latest research on child development. Children as Constructivist Learners Early Childhood Directors as Visionaries Early Childhood Educators as Professionals Families as Engaged Partners Environments as Inspiration for Inquiry Discover CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) as Sh’mirat HaGuf (taking care of our bodies) Israel as a Source and Resource These lenses articulate our approach to our work. They inspire as much as they inform. Ideally, they are manifested daily in our centre: in the ways in which we structure our time, our curricula, and our classrooms; the quality of our relationships with our students, our faculties, our host institutions; and the partnerships we forge with the families in our communities. They improve and sharpen our vision, and enable us to see our world more clearly and in a particularly focused way. Judaism is not exclusively a matter of the “what” or “when” in the world of ritual and faith, but includes the deeper matters of the “how” and “why” of the totality of our lives and our relationships to the world as a whole. It welcomes diversity, inclusion, reflection, and innovation. For each lens, there is a Hebrew word that captures the essence of the lens, a literal translation of the Hebrew, and a more interpretive word or phrase, which illuminates our understanding of the core value within each category. Although Sheva is based on Jewish lenses, the values that they portray are universal and inclusive to all. Using the Ontario Ministry of Education's “Early Learning for Every Child Today” (ELECT) in conjunction with the Sheva Framework, our programs meet and exceed Ministry requirements for curriculum planning and implementation. We believe in the importance of communication with families. This is done through daily feedback, observations, documentation, parent-teacher interviews (Preschool/JK) and through our newsletters. Our Kaymbu app allows communication with families to be easy and it is simple to use. Observance of Holidays As our schools are within a Jewish Community Centre, we celebrate the Jewish holidays and Shabbat. These holidays are introduced in a non-religious fashion. We base the focus on the story rather than the religious aspect of the holiday. We welcome information from other cultures and will happily talk to the children about other cultural (not religious) holidays as well. We have big celebrations for Chanukah, Purim and/or Passover. Weekly Suzuki Early Childhood Education Music Classes The Suzuki philosophy compliments our beliefs of what a successful learning environment should be, and we are pleased to bring it to our children! This class develops the children’s rhythmic and melodic awareness in addition to memory and social skills. The curriculum is built around a repertoire of lullabies, action songs, and nursery rhymes for children ages 18 months to five years old. With a strong emphasis on a positive and nurturing approach to learning music, the classes will be a wonderful beginning to a child’s appreciation of music. Children will learn skills that will benefit them in all aspects of their life such as confidence, self-regulation, listening, mental focus, memory, increased vocabulary, language, socially acceptable behaviour, sensitivity, and numeracy development – all while having a blast! Classes will be taught by a registered Suzuki Early Childhood Education instructor. Hebrew Engagement Program Our Hebrew Engagement program uses the Jewish calendar to teach the children about the holidays and special dates, general vocabulary, colours, numbers, and letters in a fun and interactive way. This is included in our childcare, preschool, and JK programs. Annual Early Childhood Gallery Exhibit Each spring, our ECE department puts together an art exhibit in The Etta and Frank Jacobs' Hospitality Lounge on the main floor of the Miles Nadal JCC. The exhibit showcases amazing projects our classrooms create based on a particular theme chosen for that year. The ideas for these projects stem from the children's initial interests, and then carry on over several months. Activities are implemented in all classroom areas: art, science, language, and motor, cognitive, and social skills. The children are actively engaged and expanding on their knowledge through these daily experiences using ELECT, Reggio, and the Sheva Framework to guide them through the process. We invite parents to see the amazing work our Toddler, Preschool, Junior Kindergarten, and After School students work on over several months. The children's artwork, documentation, and any photos of the children are displayed in the lounge for viewing. Everything is kept as a surprise to parents until April of each year when the exhibit is up in the lounge. And just for our JK’ers! In addition to our weekly music class, our JK children will receive a weekly Suzuki music class with a focus on playing the violin! We will work on basic posture, coordination, and listening skills, working on and off their self-made instruments. Throughout the year the class will focus on mastering the Suzuki Twinkle variations. Beginning in September 2024, we are pleased to introduce a new literacy program being piloted with our JK children. The Sounds-Write program will use evidence-based approaches to teaching the skills to our JK children to help set them up for success as they learn pre-reading and writing skills. These skills will be tools needed as they move to SK. Our Faculty OUR FACULTY Our teaching staff is made up of both Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs) and experienced Educational Assistants. Our educators are hired based on their experience, passion for children and their belief in our centre’s philosophy. All this happens during Passover, a time when hospitality, for Jews, means so much. don molnar 2001 1999 Winner: Einstein’s Gift by Vern Thiessen – Alberta Einstein’s Gift follows the life and work of Nobel laureate Dr. Fritz Haber, a man who risked everything for a country that never accepted him. Haber, a chemist who worked hard to enhance life, discovered too late that when his knowledge was put in the hands of the wrong people, millions would die and that his efforts to serve humanity were futile against political will, nationalism, and war. vern thiessen 1999 2021 Winner: Precipice by Primrose Madayag Knazan - Winnipeg Precipice follows Sharrah’s conversion story to Judaism, a journey that takes her from her future in-laws’ Seder table to a synagogue in the Philippines. Caught between her Filipino mother’s expectations and her brother’s estrangement from the family, she wonders if she’s ready to walk the path of the Torah. primrose madayag knazan 2021 2017 Winner: The Covenant by Alice Abracen - Montreal. The Covenant is set in June 1944, as Red Cross dignitaries are marveling at the lively town of Theresienstadt: a haven for the Jewish people in the heart of Czechoslovakia. Little do they know that this paradise is a ghetto and a concentration camp, elaborately staged in order to conceal Nazi crimes against humanity. Forced to participate in the terrible charade, the ambitious politician Peter and the dedicated doctor Hilde find their idealism, their faith, and their love put to a terrible test. Inspired by a true story. The Covenant’s dramaturges were Sarah Elkashef and Brian Drader. alice abracen 2017 2013 Winner: The Girl Rabbi of the Golden West by Jennifer Wise – Victoria. Written for the 150th anniversary of Canada's oldest continuously active synagogue, The Girl Rabbi of the Golden West uses comedy and cross-dressing to solve a real-life historical mystery: how did it happen that in 19th-century Canada, an orthodox congregation hired a woman as their rabbi? Throughout the High Holiday season of 1895, Miss Ray Frank of California made history by officiating from the pulpit of Congregation Emanu-El in Victoria, BC. Written for seven female actors who impersonate, by turns, the women and the men of the synagogue, this site-specific comedy celebrates the surprisingly progressive values that brought a woman to the bema in a gold-rush town, and healed a bitterly divided community while inspiring the man who would go on to become Canada's first Jewish judge. jennifer wise 2013 2011 Winner: Haunted by Daniel Karasik – Toronto When Abby’s husband dies she starts attending synagogue. She befriends David, the young rabbi, and now that friendship is turning into something more. Meanwhile, her daughter claims she’s begun to spend time with her father’s ghost. A play about rational people intoxicated by the unseen. daniel karasik 2011 2009 Winner: Martyrs Street by Misha Shulman - New York/Israel/Toronto Through the story of two neighbours, Martyrs Street depicts the rise of religious and nationalist radicalism, both Palestinian and Jewish, in the West Bank city of Hebron. misha shulman 2009 2007 Winner: The Bleeding Season by Brandon Marlon – Ottawa During the First Intifada in Israel (1987-1993) Koby Mandola was an ambulance paramedic and his best friend Talia Gidoli was a police officer. Fresh out of the IDF, they dealt together with the violence and casualties that seemed without foreseeable end. Ten years later arrives the Second Intifada (2000-2005), and Talia is now a Mossad agent who, with her partner Levy Tzion, tracks down a key Hamas operative in Canada who shared his childhood with Koby in Khan Yunis before the uprisings so severely polarized Jewish Israelis and Palestinian Arabs. Facing each other under such special circumstances, both sides confront their choices and hold the other to account in a mutual crucible of principle, memory, and faith. brandon marlon 2007 2005 Winner: Lost Daughter by Tara Goldstein – Toronto Lost Daughter is an historical drama inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. It is set in the Canadian city of Toronto in the summer of 1933, a summer of intense heat and widespread unemployment. A summer when Gentile youth wore swastika badges to keep the city’s Jews out of public parks and away from beaches. Lost Daughter engages with the themes of Canadian xenophobia and anti-Semitism in the summer of 1933, but also portrays the rich tradition of forgiveness in Jewish thought and culture. In the summer of 2008, on the 75th anniversary of the Christie Pits riot, the play had its Canadian premiere as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival. tara goldstein 2005 2002 Winner: Remember Me by Irene Watts – Vancouver Marianne Kohn arrives in England on the first Kindertransport allowed to leave Nazi Germany. At Liverpool Street Station she waits for a sponsor. Finally, a woman whose expected young domestic, has not arrived is persuaded to take in the eleven year old refugee. Her refugee status is belittled by her hosts. Only the resident maid and a friend she makes at school, give her some measure of stability. At the outbreak of World War 2, Marianne is evacuated to Wales, and a series of unsuitable billets. Marianne never gives up hope of a reunion with her mother who on the day of the great evacuation, arrives in England on a domestic permit. irene watts 2002 2000 Winner: Gordin in America by Beth Kaplan – Ontario Jacob Gordin, a writer, educator, and socialist reformer, is forced to emigrate from Russia to New York in 1891, at the age of 38. He quickly becomes the leading playwright in the heated world of the Yiddish theatre on the Lower East Side and subsequently around the world. Gordin’s wife and many children, who follow later, have a difficult time adjusting to the new world. With his bull-headed zeal, he makes dangerous enemies, one of whom, Abraham Cahan of the Jewish Daily Forward, embarks on a poisonously destructive vendetta. Gordin dies at the age of fifty-six, bitter that his life’s work has been undone. But there is hope a descendent will tell his tale. Jacob Gordin’s eighth child, Nadia or Nettie, was my grandmother. This is the true story, told in brief scenes, of the extraordinary life of playwright and rabble-rouser Jakov Mikhailovich Gordin, known in his time as the Jewish Shakespeare. beth kaplan 2000 PAST WINNERS Past Winners Fitness Membership at the Miles Nadal JCC FITNESS MEMBERSHIP Perks of Becoming a Member Membership Pricing Book a Tour Contact our Membership Team The Fine Print Perks lane swimming every day in our heated saltwater pool precor™ cardio training machines, concept 2™ rowing machines, cybex™ strength training circuit machines, stages™ indoor cycling bikes 50+ weekly classes including aquafit, pilates, essentrics, cyclefit, zumba™, yoga, groove™, strength, and dozens more locker rooms with steam rooms, saunas, whirlpools and free towel service dedicated weight room and boxing/heavy bag studio reciprocal benefits with JCCs across North America drop-in sports like basketball, pickleball, and volleyball 10% discount and early registration on most programs discounts at local businesses special members-only events and contests throughout the year voting privileges at our annual general meeting Whether you are brand new to fitness, haven't found the right environment to work out, or you're an experienced athlete looking for a challenge, the Miles Nadal JCC is designed to meet all of your fitness, health and wellness needs.
