Al Green Theatre
The Al Green Theatre is an accessible performance and cinema venue located within the Miles Nadal JCC in Toronto. The Theatre serves as a multi-use cultural space supporting a range of events, including film screenings, live performances, lectures, and community-based programming.
The Theatre’s programming reflects the richness and diversity of contemporary Jewish culture and offers a mix of artistic and community-focused events, including theatre, music, film, speaker series, and cultural/civic programs.
Position Summary
The Senior Director, Al Green Theatre provides senior leadership for the creative vision, programming strategy, audience experience, theatre operations, and financial stewardship of the Al Green Theatre at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNjcc). This role is responsible for curating a vibrant and dynamic calendar of performances, cultural productions, and artistic collaborations that position the theatre as a leading hub for arts, culture, and community engagement.
The Senior Director will actively seek out and cultivate new talent, ideas, and productions that reflect both Jewish cultural expression and diverse artistic voces. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, this role ensures the Al Green Theatre stage is consistently activated with compelling programming that attracts audiences, fosters creativity, and strengthens the theatre’s reputation within Toronto’s cultural landscape.
The Senior Director also provides strategic oversight of the Front of House and Theatre Technical teams, ensuring that staff are well supported and equipped to deliver exceptional audience, artistic, and technical experiences. This includes establishing and maintaining high standards for customer service, theatre presentation, technical operations, and overall event delivery, while continuously enhancing the theatre experience in alignment with the Al Green Theatre’s elevated brand and positioning. All work within the organization ladders up to the strategic plan.
Schedule Information
• Full-time, 37.5 hours per week/regular schedule.
• This position requires a minimum of four (4) days per week of in-office work, subject to the operational requirements of the organization. The schedule and designated work location will be established in consultation with your supervisor.
• Primarily based at 750 Spadina Avenue with flexibility for occasional remote work
• Evening and weekend availability required to support performances and events

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Artistic Direction & Programming Strategy
• Lead the artistic vision and programming strategy for the Al Green Theatre.
• Continue the revitalization of the theatre as a destination for high-quality, mission-aligned performances, co-productions, and presenting partnerships.
• Align theatre programming with the MNjcc’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
• Curate a diverse range of multidisciplinary programming, including theatre, literary, music, film, dance, comedy, and civic gatherings.
• Develop, produce, and present MNjcc-led and co-presented productions that elevate Jewish storytelling, cross-cultural dialogue, and contemporary artistic expression.
• Identify and cultivate, with the input of MNjcc programming team, emerging and established artists, producers, and cultural collaborators locally, nationally, and internationally. Â
• Oversee programming cycles, production planning, and resource allocation to ensure artistic excellence and operational effectiveness.
• Build strategic presenting partnerships that expand the theatre’s artistic offerings and audience reach.
• Lead Al Green Theatre internal customer service. Providing more team cohesion and team investment in striving for professionalism and care.
• In partnership with Marketing team, review, restructure and refine the Al Green Theatre experience, internal and external.
• Lead AGT staff talent acquisition and management.
Production & Program Oversight
• Oversee the planning and coordination of theatre productions and events in collaboration with theatre operations and technical teams.
• Ensure all programs are delivered with high artistic and production quality.
• Work collaboratively with marketing and communications teams to promote theatre programming and expand audiences.
• Oversee scheduling and program logistics to optimize theatre use in alignment with industry standards, ensuring a sustainable mix of performances, rentals, community programming, and necessary dark periods.
Front of House Leadership & Audience Experience
• Provide strategic oversight and leadership of the Front of House team, ensuring a welcoming, professional, accessible, and consistently excellent audience experience.
• Establish and maintain clear Front of House service standards, protocols, and expectations aligned with the Al Green Theatre’s elevated brand and customer service goals.
• Ensure Front of House staff are appropriately recruited, scheduled, trained, equipped, and supported to succeed in their roles.
• Foster a culture of professionalism, hospitality, accountability, and care across the Front of House team.
• Monitor audience feedback and operational performance, identifying and implementing opportunities to continuously improve the audience experience.
Theatre Technical Leadership & Operations
• Provide strategic oversight of the Theatre Technical team, ensuring staff are appropriately skilled, scheduled, equipped, and supported to deliver a high-quality technical experience.
• Audit and or establish minimum standards in the theatre including technical, production, safety, and presentation standards for the Al Green Theatre.
• Ensure technical requirements are appropriately planned and delivered for performances, rentals, and events, in collaboration with artists, producers, and internal teams.
• Oversee the ongoing development, training, and professional growth of the Technical team, while identifying equipment, infrastructure, and resource needs.
• Lead the continued enhancement of the theatre’s technical and visual presentation, including staging, lighting, and set design, ensuring it is aesthetic, contemporary, and commensurate with the theatre’s elevated brand
Financial Stewardship & Sustainability
• Provide financial leadership for theatre programming and related cultural initiatives.
• In partnership with the Executive Leadership Team, develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and earned revenue targets.
• Collaborate with Finance and Bookings teams on pricing strategies, scheduling, and program viability.
• Work with the Development team to advance grants, sponsorships, and donor support for theatre programming.
• Monitor and report on key indicators related to attendance, revenue performance, and audience engagement.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
• Serve as an ambassador for the Al Green Theatre and the MNjcc’s cultural initiatives.
• Build and maintain relationships with artists, audiences, funders, lay leaders, and community partners.
• Strengthen the theatre’s visibility and reputation within Toronto’s arts and culture community.
• Represent the organization at performances, sector gatherings, and public events.
Expectations

Qualifications
• Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience in arts, culture, or cultural institutions.
• Demonstrated success curating and presenting live arts programming.
• Experience developing artistic partnerships and producing cultural events.
• Proven experience managing staff, budgets, and complex programming portfolios.
• Strong financial literacy and strategic planning skills.
• Excellent communication, relationship-building, and public-facing leadership abilities.
• Knowledge of Jewish culture and community dynamics is an asset.
• Experience in nonprofit or cultural organizations preferred.
• Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Salary and Benefits
• Annual salary range: $90,000 to $105,000, commensurate with experience
